Sagres, Portugal
19th November, 2022
After emerging from the German shore of the Baltic Sea at the end of September, traveling through Luxembourg, France, Spain and Portugal, the sculpture will now reach the southwestern-most point of continental Europe and will return to where it belongs - the ocean.
In Sagres, Portugal, it ends its journey in which we were reminded about the importance of the ocean, its habitats and its inhabitants, and goes back to the underwater world to continue to witness the relationship between humans and the sea, in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Portugal, as the EU in general, has pledged to protect 30% of its waters by 2030. This is crucial to slow down the rate at which habitats and species are disappearing, and give the ocean, and us, more resilience to fight against climate change. Unfortunately, many marine protected areas are scarcely controlled and destructive fishing practices keep happening. This needs to change.
Before it goes back to the water, the sculpture can be viewed on November 19 in the Port of Sagres (Baleeira), where representatives from local administration, ecotourism, fisheries and NGOs will meet and highlight the need to implement marine protected areas and manage them responsibly.
