Kiel, Germany

28th September 2022 - 11am - 3pm

The future of the Baltic Sea and its fish populations is in danger. Fish that once seemed infinite have now completely collapsed under the pressure of fishing, pollution and climate crisis.

This is the area where the "voice of the fish" art action began on September 28, 2022. Off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, a sculpture of a woman with a fish in her arms appeared and was recovered from the sea by a diving team. The sculpture speaks on behalf of the fish it brought to the surface. In the German Baltic it told the story of how cod and herring have disappeared from the Baltic Sea and how heavy nets have destroyed seagrass beds and spawning grounds. The event in Kiel was only the beginning of the sculpture’s journey across Europe, giving a voice to the fish and challenging and inspiring us to rethink and reshape our relationship with the ocean.

The sculpture can be viewed from 03. - 06.10. at the Simone Menne Gallery in Kiel. A panel discussion on the fisheries of the future with representatives from politics, science, business and NGOs will take place at the gallery on 06.10. from 7 to 9 pm and can be watched via livestream on the BUND YouTube channel.
